Jennie Liu

Piano

Chinese pianist Jennie Xiaopei Liu has an unusual background — she did not begin formal piano training until she was nineteen. Yet, her intuitive and sensitive performances have already been praised for having “that command of audience attention all successful performers possess” (John Perry), “unaffected yet elegant musicianship” (Marina Lomazov), and being “technically very fine” (Anton Nel). She has won awards such as 1st Place in Rutgers’ 2023 Chamber Competition; 2nd Place in the 2021 MTNA Stecher-Horowitz Two Piano Competition; 1st Place in the 7th Valletta International Piano Competition in Malta; and 1st Place in the 2021 Lamont Solo Honors Competition, which resulted in her concerto debut of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.2 at the Gates Concert Hall at the Newmann Center of Performing Arts. She has performed in masterclasses with prominent pianists such as Jerome Lowenthal, Julian Martin, Gilbert Kalish, and Jerome Rose.

Jennie is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree at the Rutgers University Mason Gross School of Arts with Dr. Vladimir Valjarevic. She holds Bachelor’s degrees in Philosophy and Music from Saint Mary’s College of Notre Dame, and Master of Music and Performance Certificate degrees from the University of Denver Lamont School of Music, where she studied with American pianist Dr. Steven Mayer.

Jennie is equally passionate about teaching as she is performing. Her unconventional path of learning the instrument has led to her firm belief in the importance of having an exceptional teacher at even the beginning stages of piano studying. She is fully bilingual and offers lessons in both English and Chinese. She has taught students both throughout the Rocky Mountain West and in China, and enjoys teaching students of all experiences and backgrounds. She has served for two years as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Denver and is currently a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Rutgers University.
