Admission
Bronx School for Music offers private and group music lessons to children in the Bronx community. Students must be at least five years old to be eligible for private lessons; children under five are welcome to begin with our Early Childhood Music Development classes.
The Musical Development Program
Every student enrolled in private lessons also participates in BSM’s Free Musical Development Program — music theory, ear-training, and choir. Thanks to major support from NYC’s Department of Cultural Affairs, these classes are provided at no additional cost, and participation is required for all private-lesson students.
Students enrolled in 30-minute private lessons receive an additional 2 hours of group instruction each week; students enrolled in 60-minute lessons receive 3 hours. Music theory meets online, and choir and Dalcroze meet either at BSM or at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
Current Enrollment
BSM is at capacity for the Spring 2026 term. New students will be considered for the Summer 2026 term, and families hoping to enroll in Fall 2026 are strongly encouraged to begin in the summer — students enrolled in the Spring and Summer 2026 terms receive enrollment priority for the fall.
Age Priorities & Piano
New piano students must be between 5 and 9 years old. Exceptions are made during the summer session, when enrollment opens to all ages and admissions policies are more flexible. Enrollment priority is also given to families who participate in BSM’s early childhood music development courses or private-lesson preparatory classes.
Adult Students:
Because BSM is near capacity, we are committed to prioritizing children in the community. When space becomes available for adult and senior lessons, we’ll let our community know.
Auditions
When student retention is high and the program is full, admission may require an audition. Please contact the administrative office before enrolling for the fall term to confirm availability.
How to register
Create an account in BSM’s online registration system, add your student(s), select courses, and complete checkout. Once your registration is received, a representative from our administrative office will be in touch to assign a lesson time.
Missed the registration window?
Not to worry — students are admitted on a rolling basis as long as space remains in our teachers’ schedules. Contact the administrative office to ask about current availability.

Lesson Scheduling
Lesson times are assigned after registration is completed and submitted. Priority for lesson times is given, in order, to:
- Returning students
- Students actively enrolled in lessons
- Students who have taken Early Childhood Music
- Students who have completed Prelude Prep
- New students, on a first-come, first-served basis
We do our best to accommodate scheduling preferences, but our schedules are at or near capacity and preferred availability may be limited. If we are unable to schedule a lesson time, families will receive a full refund.

Tuition and Fees
2026 Summer Semester Tuition:
Private lessons:
- 30-Minute Private Lesson: $238 (7 weeks at $34 per lesson)
- 60-Minute Private Lesson: $441 (7 weeks at $63 per lesson)
Bronx Bops Early Childhood Music:
- 45-Minute Early Childhood Music: $140 (7 weeks at $20 per class)
2026 Fall Semester Tuition:
Private lessons:
- 30-Minute Private Lesson: $578 (17 weeks at $34 per lesson)
- 60-Minute Private Lesson: $1,071 (17 weeks at $63 per lesson)
Bronx Bops Early Childhood Music:
- 45-Minute Early Childhood Music: $280 (14 weeks at $20 per class)
Registration fees per term:
Registration Fee: $35 per student
Installment Fee (if elected) $10 per payment. Maximum of 4 payments allowed if cart total is over $1,500
Monthly Installment plan is not available during the summer term.
Tuition Installment Plan:
Tuition must be paid at registration in order to secure a place in a teacher’s lesson schedule.
For families who are unable to pay the full semester’s tuition up front, BSM offers two installment options:
- Two-payment plan: available to all families, regardless of cart total. Half of the semester’s tuition, registration fees, and a one-time installment fee are charged at registration; the balance is charged mid-semester.
- Monthly payment plan: available to families with a cart balance greater than $1,500.
The monthly plan is not offered during the summer term, as the summer session is already structured as a single monthly payment.
Payment methods: Credit card, debit card, ACH transfer, or Zelle. Families wishing to pay by cash, money order, ACH, or Zelle should contact the administrative office before registering. Families using the installment plan must pay by credit or debit card and keep a card on file.
