Our Philosophy

At the Bronx School for Music we believe that all children are born musical and that music plays a fundamental role in helping little ones communicate and build language skills. Most people often think that being musical is a question of talent and while that may sound reasonable, we believe that all children can develop musicianship skills when introduced to them as early as possible with the proper pedagogical approach.

Bronx Bops

Music and Movement for Little Ones and Kids at Heart!

Bronx Bops, the Bronx School for Music’s early childhood program, introduces children to rhythm, melody, harmony, tempo, dynamics, and articulation through playful exploration. In each class, children move to music, try out instruments, and play musical games. Caregiver participation is a key part of the experience—classes are designed for adults and children to learn together, building strong musical foundations and bonds. Open to children ages 1–5, classes are led by experienced faculty in early childhood and elementary music education and include live instrumental accompaniment.

Our early childhood classes are open to children ages 1 to 5 years of age. Classes are led by an experienced faculty member with a background in early childhood and elementary music education and feature live instrumental accompaniment.

Prelude Prep

A Bridge from Music and Movement to Private Instruction

Prelude Prep is a fun, 45-minute class designed for children preparing to begin private lessons. Through themed activities and movement, children build the focus, independence, and musical readiness needed for one-on-one instruction. Whether transitioning from Bronx Bops or just beginning, this program offers a supportive first step.

Please note: Parents are expected to remain in the classroom as active observers. While there will be moments of participation, much like in private lessons, parents are encouraged to stay attentive so they can support at-home practice and reinforce learning.

What to Expect:

Foundations for Private Lessons

Each week, children explore early music skills—like the music alphabet, treble clef, steady beat, and note values—through playful storytelling, crafts, and hands-on activities that lay the groundwork for one-on-one lessons in the fall.

Free Play

Each class includes 10–15 minutes of open musical playtime, where children can explore a variety of percussion instruments on their own or with peers.

Intentional Movement

Inspired by the Dalcroze approach, children engage in thematic movement activities designed to develop rhythmic awareness and a strong sense of musical timing.

Playful Summer Themes

Weekly topics keep learning fun and fresh—like Rollercoaster Week (exploring high and low sounds), Ice Cream Week (rhythm), and Burgers & Fries Week (Treble Clef basics).

Music at Home

Students participate in weekly take-home activities that encourage family involvement while building musical skills.

Percussion Playtime

A “My First Instrument” Class for Preschool Aged Children!

This class weaves together children’s literature, art, and music to introduce young learners to the glockenspiel—a colorful, xylophone-like instrument with a bright, bell-like tone. Each bar features a rainbow-colored sticker with its letter name, giving children a familiar and friendly visual reference as they explore pitch, melody, and playful instrument anatomy.

Classes begin with movement-based warm-ups, followed by a story and interactive instrument play inspired by the book. While children may learn simple songs, the focus is on joyful discovery—experimenting with sound, rhythm, and musical storytelling on an instrument that’s just their size.

Please note: While this is a “My first instrument” class, Percussion Playtime is designed for parent-child collaboration.

FAQ

Is there a class size limit?

  • Yes! Our classes are limited to 8 families per class.

Who attends the sessions?

  • A single enrollment includes one child and one parent/caregiver per child. Children MUST be accompanied by an adult participant, and may not be dropped off. We ask that the same caregiver attend each session (if possible), in order to build a routine with your child and so that learning becomes sequential.

How many sessions can I attend per week?

  • Families can only attend one session each week. For instance, Wednesdays at 10:00am. A single enrollment includes 12 sessions, once per week on the same day and at the same time. If you need to change lesson days and times, please let the administrative office know and we will try our best to accommodate requests.

Can I enroll two children in the same session? Bring two caregivers?

  • Yes! The more students the merrier! We prefer to have one caregiver per child.

What if I can’t make my normal class on a particular week?

  • Unfortunately, the lesson will be missed. Make-up lessons are not offered. Classes are sequential. Students need to try and attend as many lessons as possible. Make-up lessons are only offered if the teacher is absent. With some exceptions, we allow one drop-in per term to another class day/time.

What if I am sick? Can I get a refund?

  • Unfortunately, we cannot offer a refund for illness, since enrollment in each session is limited.
