Kiera Peppers

Early Childhood Music

Kiera is a certified music teacher, music producer, and illustrator from the Northeast Bronx. Her musical journey began at the age of six when her brother sat her down at their uncle’s piano and taught her how to play “Heart and Soul”. From that moment, Kiera set out to learn new songs by ear and improvise her own pieces, often playing them for her family. Inspired by the music and artistry of Stevie Wonder, Art Tatum, and Chopin, she started private piano lessons at the age of 17, performing annually in recitals for seven years.

Kiera graduated from Hostos Community College in 2014 with an associate’s degree in early childhood education. While there, she also studied music and movement and served as Vice President of the Educators of the Future club. During that time, she led Mommy & Me music classes at a preschool on the Upper East Side. She continued her studies in early childhood education, earning a bachelor of science degree from New York University with a focus on music theory and jazz.

Over the past six years, Kiera has developed a passion for teaching general music through a multi-sensory and thematic lens as an elementary music teacher in the South Bronx. In the summer of 2022, Kiera joined Jazz Lab NY to study and practice jazz piano, under the direction of Russ Nolan. Currently, Kiera is pursuing a master’s in music and music education at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she is honing her skills in music production. She enjoys conducting field recordings, reading about Bronx history, and tying it all together through storytelling and illustration.

Kiera is happy to serve her hometown as a member of the early childhood faculty here at the Bronx School for Music.
