Cheryl Chin

Piano

Malaysian pianist Cheryl Chin embarked on her musical journey at age 5. Initially classically trained, she has expanded her versatility to areas such as accompaniment, composition, and improvisation. With a specialization in accompaniment, she excels in various musical contexts. Her expertise shines when supporting brass instruments and vocal performances, particularly in musical theatre. She recently captivated audiences as a keyboardist in MSM Alpha Psi Omega’s “For Madmen Only” musical production.

Her journey includes serving as an accompanist and arranger for “The Wicked Musical” at REAL International School SURIA, Malaysia, and collaborating with the MSM Symphony Orchestra for Unsuk Chin’s newly premiered “Frontispiece for Orchestra” in the United States. Currently transitioning into jazz, she studies jazz improvisation under Jeremy Manasia while nurturing her passion for composition. She participated in a musical theatre writing workshop, “Across A Crowded Room” at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, where her composition “Prove them Wrong” has garnered feedback from musical theatre professional, Helen Park. Infusing jazz elements into her compositions, she continues to explore new dimensions of musical expression.

Cheryl earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Classical Piano from the Manhattan School of Music, studying under Inesa Sinkevych, and instrumental accompanying with John Forconi. Alongside her major studies, she embraced performance opportunities at prestigious music festivals across Spain, Hong Kong, Korea, and Malaysia, enriching her growth through interactions with esteemed mentors such as Jose Ramón Mendéz, Julian Martin, James Giles, Robert McDonald, Logan Skelton, Richard Ormrod, and Peter Amstutz.
